Rafiki has been close friends with Zazu ever since the events of the original Lion King. Zazu is shown to have a positive relationship with the duo as they both fought alongside each other against Scar and they both watched Simba ascend to the throne of Pride, though he is shown to sometimes find them a bother. In The Lion King when Simba and Nala wanted to go to the Watering Hole she suggests that Zazu goes with them and are also shown to share their distain for Scar when it is revealed that he killed Mufasa, both fighting in the battle against Scar and the hyenas. Zazu helped in the battle for Pride Rock after hearing that Scar killed his good friend and was shown to be deeply saddened upon hearing of his death. Similarly, Scar saw Zazu as nothing more than a pest and repeatedly sought to torment the hornbill when given the chance.When Simba was a cub, he did not care for the bird at all, often teasing Zazu with his best friend Nala, but once Simba returned to the Pride Lands and defeated Scar, he accepted Zazu as a loyal friend and also his royal advisor and majordomo to where he becomes concerned about him when he is not on time for the Morning Report.
